In Memoriam: Professor Martin K. Starr

A few weeks ago, the field of Operations Management lost one its most famous and brightest stars when Marty Starr passed away at age 97 here in Winter Park, Florida.

I consider myself both lucky and privileged to have worked along side Marty for over a decade at Rollins College’s Crummer Graduate School of Business. This was late in his career. Marty held degrees from MIT and Columbia (PhD in 1953) and then spent 32 teaching at the latter. But when I went on sabbatical some 25 years ago, we needed to find a visiting prof to take over my operations courses for a semester. By the best of chances, Marty agreed to take a leave from NYC for a warm winter in Winter Park. He loved it here and never went back!

Rollins gave him the title Distinguished Professor of OM–and indeed was Marty distinguished. He had served as president of the Institute of Management Sciences (now called INFORMS) in 1974 and as president of the Production and Management Society (POMS) in 1995. He was also the longest serving editor-in-chief of Management Science (1967-1982). Both organizations elected him as a Fellow and POMS even created the annual Martin  K. Starr Excellence Award in 2006.

Author of over 20 books and 100 research papers and consultant to the biggest names in industry, the world learned much from Marty’s new ideas about mass customization, modular production, and inventory control. What we learned at Rollins was that Marty was a great colleague and a fantastic teacher. He and his beloved wife, Polly, who passed away a few years ago, never missed a Crummer School or a POMS event or meeting. They were an inseparable team.

Marty is survived by his son Loren , daughter-in-law Gail, and grandson Michael. My wife and I are very happy that they live but 2 blocks away and were here to care for Marty these recent years,

OM Syllabi: St. Petersberg College, Rollins College, President University, Goldey-Beacom College

We are pleased to share the OM syllabi of four additional colleges that are teaching from our text this month. To see the 27 schools previously posted, just click on the OM Syllabi link in the right hand column.

St. Petersberg College, Dr. Wende Huehn-Brown, MAN 3504.Wende’s course provides a good model of blended learning, with 80% of the course completely on-line. She uses MyOMLab for assignments.

Rollins College, Dr. Michele Boulanger, INB 365. Many months ago, we posted my MBA syllabus at Rollins. Here is Michele’s undergrad class, which is taught in the International Business Dept., and includes 20 international mini cases. She also uses MyOMLab.

President University (Indonesia), Suresh Kumar. Suresh teaches the course at this new university, in English, using our OM 10/e. (The text, by the way, has been translated into Indonesian, and is available in  Chinese, Korean, Turkish, Spanish, Portuguese, European, and Indian versions).

Goldey-Beacom College, Dr. Robert Donnelly, MGT 481. Bob’s very interesting  post on this blog (Dec.2, 2011) details how he treats simulation in his course.

OM Syllabi: Temple U., Washington State U., Texas Tech U. and Rollins College

Jay and I never cease to be impressed by the variety of ways our colleagues teach OM at their schools.  Some profs spend 2 weeks on LP, others focus on quality and process strategy, while others actually cover all 17 chapters in sequence! We thought you might be interested in how different schools using our text face that challenge. So today we share 4 OM syllabi with you from a wide variety of  schools. Here they are:

Temple University, taught by Howard Weiss, as an undergrad course. MSOM 3101 syllabus. You might note Howard’s use of Excel OM, POM, and MyOMLab in homework assignments.

Texas Tech University, taught by Phillip Flamm, as a large section undergrad course.  ISQS 3344 syllabus. Phillip makes extensive use of “clickers” in his classes, as he noted in his Guest Blog last week.

Washington State University, taught by Chuck Munson, as an undergrad course. Mgt Op 340 syllabus. Note how Chuck integrates The Goal and MyOMLab into his course.

Rollins College, taught by Barry Render, as an MBA core course. POM 503 syllabus. You will notice that I have a lot of guest speakers. I use MyOMLab  for pre-class quizzes, homework, and tests. Because it is a graduate class, there are cases assigned every week.

We invite you to share your OM syllabus with us as well. Just send  it as a Word file or as an internet link to brender@cfl.rr.com.
